Carregar o fardo de ser filha de um dos maiores compositores e fundadores da bossa nova e de uma grande cantora não deve ser mole. Há muita pressão – vide Maria Rita e sua irritação ao ser comparada com a mãe, Elis Regina -, e acima de tudo, muita expectativa acerca do que virá. Bebel Gilberto parece não se importar. A carga genética, obviamente, acompanha-a em sua carreira, mas não apenas para abrir portas. Ela diz que, do pai, aprendeu tudo sobre música – acordava e dormia ao som de seu violão; e da mãe, aprendeu a cantar. O caminho? Ela fez o seu, à sua maneira.
João Gilberto lançou a filha aos palcos quando esta tinha apenas 14 anos. “Chega de Saudade” foi a canção escolhida e Bebel, no auge de sua puberdade, não fez feio. O primeiro EP veio 6 anos depois, em 1986. Ao se mudar para Nova Iorque no começo dos anos 90, a cantora se viu inserida numa cena bem diferente da brasileira. Influenciada pelo pop e pela urban music, e com parcerias consolidadas, lançou, em 2000 seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, Tanto Tempo. O mais aclamado de sua carreira, que contou com versões de “Samba da Benção”, “Mais Feliz” que compôs em parceria com Cazuza e Dé (“Preciso Dizer que Te Amo”, “Amigos de Bar” e “Mulher Sem Razão” foram as outras compostas pelo trio) , “Samba e Amor” do tio Chico Buarque, músicas próprias, além de uma versão em inglês para “Samba de Verão”. Logo depois vieram Bebel Gilberto, de 2004, e Momento, de 2007. Vale destacar sua participação no projeto Peeping Tom de Mike Patton (vocalista do Faith No More), cantando “Caipirinha”.
All In One, quarto álbum de estúdio da cantora, mescla o jazz com batidas eletrônicas, e ritmos brasileiros. Bebel declarou, há pouco tempo, estar apaixonada e madura, e diz que o disco é “uma canção de amor na qual tudo acontece ao mesmo tempo”. Quem poderia definir melhor? “Canção de Amor” abre alas devagar, conquistando seu espaço aos poucos, e crescendo à medida que o primeiro refrão é cantado. Fica aquela vontade de deitar numa rede e deixar a vida passar, sem pressa. “Sun is Shining”, regravação de um reggae de Bob Marley, quase chega a soar séria. Suas batidas entram e mudam essa primeira impressão. Com Daniel Jobim (neto de Tom Jobim), surgiu a regravação de “Bim Bom”, que tem aquele “quê” de bossa nova e jazz – se ouvisse aleatoriamente, poderia apostar que era da turma das antigas. Uma de minhas preferidas, juntamente com “Nossa Senhora”, música mais “brasileira” do disco, e que leva uma das letras mais belas: ‘Nossa Senhora me deu a mão, me deu a luz, me deu um gás/ Nossa Senhora é demais’ (letras que tem a fé como temática me emocionam, e olhe que nem sou religiosa). “The Real Thing” é carregada de pop e jazz, e não é atoa que seja um dos hits. Ah, vale comentar que essa é de Stevie Wonder. Ao primeiro toque de “Ela (On My Way)”, imaginei a voz de Caetano – mas me vi transportada para uma cafeteria, surpreendida por uma lounge music carregada de sentimentalismo. “Far From The Sun” tem um belo piano, e antecede a música que leva o nome do álbum. “All In One” merece destaque, e define o que a própria Bebel disse do novo trabalho. Tudo acontece ao mesmo tempo. É o mix do cd inteiro, sem soar repetitiva ou cansativa. A próxima é “Forever”, quase introspectiva, com seu riacho e pássaros ao fundo. “Secret (Segredo)” chega ao pé do ouvido como uma confidência que precisa ser espalhada. Se você fechar os olhos, dá até para sentir a Bebel Gilberto por perto. Numa homenagem à eterna Carmen Miranda e seus 100 anos completados em 2009, “Chica Chica Boom Chic” é a mais animada, e assim como “Nossa Senhora”, é 99% brasileira. Para fechar, “Port Antonio”, e a certeza de que All In One pode não ser melhor que o debut Tanto Tempo, mas mostra uma Bebel mais centrada, mais certa de ter trilhado o caminho correto.

There are a lot of pressure - look Maria Rita and her irritation when she is compared with the mother, Elis Regina - and above all, a lot of expectation about what will come. Bebel Gilberto does not seem to care. The genetic load, of course, accompanies her in her career, but not just to open doors. She says that, with her father, learned all about music - used to wake and sleep with the sound of his guitar, and with her mother, learned to sing. The path? She made it, in her own way.
João Gilberto's daughter has been on stage since she was only 14 years. "Chega de Saudade" was the chosen song and Bebel, at her puberty, has not done badly. The first EP came 6 years later, in 1986. By moving to New York in the early '90s, the singer found herself placed in a scene very different from the Brazilian scene. Influenced by pop and urban music, and consolidated partnerships, has released in 2000 her first album, Tanto Tempo. The most acclaimed of her career, which included versions of "Samba da Benção", "Mais Feliz" which she composed in partnership with Cazuza and Dé ("Preciso Dizer que te Amo", "Amigos de Bar" and "Mulher sem Razão" and others were composed by them), "Samba e Amor" by her uncle Chico Buarque, her original songs, and an English version for "Summer Samba". After, came Bebel Gilberto (2004) and Momento (2007). It is worth mentioning her participation in the project Peeping Tom by Mike Patton (lead singer of Faith No More), singing "Caipirinha".
All In One, her fourth studio album, blends jazz with electronic beats and Brazilian rhythms. Bebel said, recently, that she is in love and she is mature, and said that the cd is "a love song in which everything happens at the same time." Who could define it better? "Cançao de Amor" opens the album slowly conquering its space bit by bit, and growing as the first chorus is sung. It lets you with that urge to lay in a hammock and let life go by, without haste. "Sun is Shining", a reggae remake by Bob Marley, almost sounds serious. Its beats come in and change that first impression. Daniel Jobim (Jobim's grandson) came in the remake of "Bim Bom" which has that "what" of bossa nova and jazz - if you heard randomly would bet that it belongs to someone of the bossa nova times. One of my favorites, along with "Nossa Senhora" the more "Brazilian" music from the album, which takes one of the most beautiful lyrics: "Nossa Senhora me deu a mão, me deu a luz, me deu um gás/ Nossa Senhora é demais" (faith lyrics as thematic touchs me, and I am not Religious). "The Real Thing" have a lot of pop and jazz, and no wonder it is one of the hits. Oh, it is worth mentioning that this is Stevie Wonder. At the first touch of "Ela (On My Way)" I imagined the voice of Caetano - but I found myself transported to a cafe, surprised by a lounge music with a lot of sentimentality. "Far From the Sea" has a beautiful piano, and precedes the music that carries the name of the album. "All In One" deserves, and defines what Bebel said about her new work. Everything happens at once. It's the mix of all in the cd, without sounding repetitive or tiresome. The next is "Forever" almost introspective, with its creek and birds in the background. "Secret (Secredo)" comes to the ear like a whisper that needs to be spread. If you close your eyes, it makes you to feel that Bebel Gilberto is close to you. In a tribute to Carmen Miranda and her eternal 100 years, completed in 2009, "Chica Chica Boom Chic" is the most lively, and well as "Nossa Senhora", is 99% Brazilian. To close, "Port Antonio", and the certainty that All In One could not be better than the debut Tanto Tempo, but Bebel shows that she is more focused, more certain to have gone in the right way.
Some songs could hurt us, attack and somehow make us uncomfortable. All In One is the cure. Its songs come through our ears and reach the soul, whispered by the soft, gentle voice of Bebel. Maybe it sounds boring. Perhaps it seems too quiet. And does it matter? For an artist who ran the risk of always being in the shadow of her parents and got out of it, it definitely does not matter.
